Background of the Study
Climate adaptation strategies are critical for ensuring agricultural resilience in the face of increasing climate variability and extreme weather events. In Nigeria, where agriculture is highly vulnerable to climate change, adaptation measures—such as the use of drought-resistant crop varieties, improved water management practices, and early warning systems—have been promoted between 2023 and 2025 to safeguard agricultural production (Oluwaseun, 2023). The theoretical framework is based on the idea that proactive adaptation can mitigate adverse impacts on crop yields and ensure stable food production. Empirical evidence suggests that countries investing in climate-smart agriculture tend to experience less severe yield fluctuations and enhanced food security (Adebisi, 2024). Nevertheless, the effectiveness of these strategies in Nigeria is hampered by limited awareness, inadequate funding, and technological constraints. This study evaluates the impact of various climate adaptation strategies on agricultural resilience, analyzing how these interventions improve yield stability, reduce vulnerability, and support farmer livelihoods. It also investigates the challenges to adoption and proposes recommendations for scaling up effective adaptation practices.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of climate adaptation strategies, Nigerian agriculture continues to suffer from the adverse effects of climate change, including reduced yields and increased crop failure (Ibrahim, 2024). The primary problem is that adaptation measures are not uniformly adopted due to limited financial resources, inadequate extension services, and a lack of tailored approaches for diverse agro-ecological zones. This results in persistent vulnerability among farmers, particularly smallholders, who are unable to cope with extreme weather events. The gap between the potential benefits of adaptation strategies and their real-world impact has led to ongoing food insecurity and economic instability in rural areas. The study seeks to determine the effectiveness of existing climate adaptation measures and identify the barriers that prevent widespread adoption, with the goal of recommending policies to enhance agricultural resilience.
